As several people requested it I decided to both create a dedicated thread for proxies, as well as a tutorial explaining my techniques. As for the location of the thread, I feel it is more appropriate in Vintage since pimpage amateurs seem have been the most interested in the "art" of alteration, with the famous extreme alteration of Terese Nielsen on FoW, of Ron Spencer on YawWill, and of Vroman & Chang on popular smokestack keycards
The tools
- Professional markers (used by ron spencer, and most people), topdown n price : copic, tria pantone, prismacolors and scratchies
- Paint : mainly acrylic (can use watercolor for backgrounds). Cheap but difficult to master +to do the details
- Technical pens (isograph by rotring) or very thin permanent markers to ink the sketch after the colors
- felt pens or pencils for those who have limited funds (not crashtest)

MY METHOD (coloring methods may vary but the rest is now fairly common)
1. Erase the card (15 min)
Using tape to protect the black borders and area you don't want to erase, I have to techniques to erase the card.
- first one is sandpaper to remove color + eraser to smooth surface. It's a bit messy but the result is a nice white card with a high grain surface that can be convinent to use felt-pens
- second method is well-known, use a cotton soaked with acetone/nail solvant. The result is a very smooth surface. In my opinion the drawback is that non-permanent pens or pencils may not penetrate enough this surface. However I used this method hereafter
2. Draw the scene (30 min)
Simple yet very important step. I draw the scene using a regular carbon pencil (HB, french norm). Be light-handed so you won't need to erase later. You can begin to create shadows as well.
3. Underline with a black permanent pen (30 min)
Depending on the art this step may be optional. However I nearly always underline important strokes in order to tune previous drawing & enhance contrast for foreground elements. If you watch closely at most "paintings" (ex : rebecca [Censored]'s arts), there is no underlining. Underlining tends to create a "comics" feeling so use wisely.
4. Color (30 min)
Here a wide range of techniques will be used. I think prismacolors & scratchies give a very good result with relatively easy blending of the colors. However I use most of the time colored feltpens,
colored pencils,
and watercolors
Sometimes I use silver/gold/copper pens for metallic effect...but you can use anything provided you're comfortable with it.
5. Finish (10 min)
Add the last elements,
- card title (with permanent pen)
- casting cost (erase existing casting cost by scratching the inside of the mana symbol it with a razorblade, redraw)
- underline borders if needed
Et voilà
I know a lot of other people here use differents techniques, YawG has an amazing way to create foil cards, and most of you use prismacolors or scratchies. In France we have Pantone but as they are costly (like 10 $ each pen) I haven't been able to try them at the moment. Anyway, feel free to contribute with your own techniques & proxies
